All TabbyandTweed weaving kits are designed by Emma and Gill, two weavers based in Salisbury, Wiltshire, and made in the UK from FSC-certified birch plywood. Every kit includes the loom, yarn, and a full instruction booklet - nothing else is needed before starting. Small Frame loom kits, bookmark kits and rigid heddle loom kits are supported by a free video tutorial on the TabbyandTweed YouTube channel.

The range covers four loom types at different price points and skill levels. Bookmark loom kits (from £25) are the most popular beginner choice - they produce woven bookmarks and teach five core weaving patterns in a single session. Frame loom kits (from £27) produce small woven pieces: coasters, wall hangings, and samplers. Circular loom kits (from £24) produce decorative round woven pieces. Rigid heddle loom kits (from £170) are the step up for weavers who want to weave scarves, table runners, and continuous fabric using British wool yarn.

If you are not sure which loom is right for you, the TabbyandTweed loom guide walks through each type, what it makes, and who it suits best.

Frequently Asked Questions - TabbyandTweed Kits

What types of kits does TabbyandTweed sell?

TabbyandTweed sells four types of weaving loom kits, each producing a different kind of woven item. Bookmark loom kits (from £25) produce woven bookmarks on a small rectangular frame and are the most popular choice for a first-time weaver. Frame loom kits (from £27) produce small square or rectangular woven pieces - coasters, samplers, and small wall hangings. Circular loom kits (from £24) produce decorative round woven pieces on a circular frame. Rigid heddle loom kits (from £170) are for weavers who want to produce continuous fabric — scarves, table runners, wraps - using British wool yarn on a table-top floor loom. Scarf weaving kits (from £38) and pick-up stick sampler kits (from £32) are add-on kits for weavers who already own a rigid heddle loom. Weaving accessories (from £28) include carry bags and the 4-shaft extension kit for the rigid heddle loom.

What weaving kit is best for a beginner?

A: The bookmark loom kits are the recommended starting point for anyone who has never woven before. They are small, quick to set up, and teach the five core weaving patterns (tabby, twill, houndstooth, log cabin, and tartan) within a single session. The circular loom kits are also a good first choice for someone who wants to make a decorative woven piece rather than a bookmark. Both are available from £24–£25 and include everything needed to begin. For a beginner who wants to go directly to weaving scarves and fabric, the rigid heddle loom kits (from £170) include a full beginner instruction booklet and a free video tutorial on the TabbyandTweed YouTube channel.

Are the weaving kits made in the UK?

Yes. All TabbyandTweed weaving looms are designed and made in the UK by Emma and Gill, two weavers based in Salisbury, Wiltshire. The looms are made from FSC-certified birch plywood. The yarn included in the kits is British wool from West Yorkshire Spinners. TabbyandTweed does not import kits from overseas - everything in the range is designed and produced in the UK.

What is the difference between a rigid heddle loom kit and a scarf weaving kit?

A rigid heddle loom kit includes the loom itself plus a scarf weaving kit to get started - it is for someone who does not yet own a rigid heddle loom. A scarf weaving kit (from £38) is a yarn-and-pattern kit for someone who already owns a rigid heddle loom and wants a new project. If the recipient or buyer does not already own a rigid heddle loom, the full loom kit is the right choice.

What is included in the rigid heddle loom kits?

Every weaving kit in the TabbyandTweed range is complete. Each one includes the loom, all the accessories needed to begin (shuttle, threading hook, comb, tapestry needle as appropriate), yarn in the colourway shown, and a full instruction booklet. Nothing else is needed before the recipient can start weaving. The set up of the rigid heddle loom is supported by a free video tutorial on the TabbyandTweed YouTube channel. The loom is reusable - once the included kit is complete, further yarn and pattern kits can be purchased to continue weaving on the same loom.

Do you offer workshops?

Yes. TabbyandTweed runs in-person weaving workshops on both small frame looms and rigid heddle looms in Salisbury, Wiltshire. The rigid heddle scarf weaving workshop (£100/£110) is a full-day session suitable for complete beginners, covering warping and weaving to produce a finished woven scarf. Workshop places can be booked here. Details of upcoming workshop dates are available on the Weaving Workshops page.

What is the best small weaving kit for a beginner?

Yes - the bookmark loom kit is TabbyandTweed’s recommended first step for anyone new to weaving. At £25, it teaches the five core weaving patterns (tabby, twill, houndstooth, log cabin, and tartan) on a small, manageable frame. The kit includes the loom, all tools, yarn, and a full instruction booklet. No experience is needed. A free video tutorial is also available on the TabbyandTweed YouTube channel.

What is included in a bookmark weaving loom kit?

A: Each standard bookmark weaving loom kit (£25) includes the assembled bookmark loom (made from FSC-certified birch plywood), a weaving comb, a tapestry needle, yarn in the colourway shown, and a full written instruction booklet covering five weave patterns. Nothing else is needed to get started. The gift box sets (£42 and £44) include two looms, a wider yarn selection.

What weave patterns can I learn with a bookmark loom kit?

The TabbyandTweed bookmark loom instruction booklet covers five weave patterns: tabby (plain weave), twill, houndstooth, log cabin, and tartan. These are the foundational patterns of rigid heddle and frame loom weaving - the same patterns you will use if you later move on to a square frame loom or a rigid heddle scarf loom. The log cabin kit also introduces a specific colour-threading technique that produces colour block patterns.

How long does it take to weave a bookmark?

Most beginners complete their first bookmark in 60 minutes, once the loom is set up. Setting up the warp for the first time takes a little longer around 15–20 minutes but becomes quicker with practice. The kits are designed to be picked up and put down easily, making them a good activity for short bursts of creative time.

What is the difference between the standard kits and the gift box sets?

The standard bookmark loom kits (£25) include one loom, tools, yarn, and instructions and most is available with a gift box option. The gift box sets (£42 and £44) include two looms - a bookmark loom and a square frame loom along with a wider yarn selection, allowing the buyer to try both loom types and a greater range of weave patterns. The sets are presented in a gift box and are gift-ready straight from purchase. They represent better value for a gift buyer who wants to give a more substantial introduction to weaving.

What comes after the bookmark loom - what is the next step?

Once you are comfortable with the bookmark loom, the natural next step is a square frame loom kit, which lets you weave small square pieces such as coasters, pot holders, and samplers. After that, a rigid heddle loom kit opens up scarf weaving, fabric weaving, and eventually 4-shaft weaving. TabbyandTweed’s loom guide can help you decide which step to take next.  When you are ready for a rigid heddle loom then you might also want to join The Weaving Club.
