Weaving Accessories for Rigid Heddle Looms - Reeds, Pick-Up Sticks, Shuttles and More, Made in the UK

Great weaving starts with great tools. Whether you are warping up your first project or refining your technique the right accessories make the difference.

If you have recently started weaving on a TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom, the most common first accessory purchase is an additional reed in a different sett size. Most loom kits includes an 8 epi (ends per inch) reed - suitable for DK weight yarn. Adding a 10 epi reed opens up weaving with 4-ply yarn for finer, lighter fabrics; adding a 6 epi reed allows weaving with Aran weight yarn for thicker, warmer pieces. All TabbyandTweed reeds are made from FSC-certified birch plywood and are compatible only with TabbyandTweed rigid heddle looms.

The pick-up stick is the tool used for pattern and texture weaving on a rigid heddle loom, it selects individual warp threads to create woven designs beyond the basic tabby weave. If you are interested in learning pick-up stick techniques, the TabbyandTweed pick-up stick sampler kits include a stick along with yarn and a pattern to get started.  The carry bag is designed specifically for the TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom and its accessories, making the loom portable for workshops and weaving events.

Frequently Asked Questions - Weaving Kit Gifts

Which reed (heddle size do I need)?

The reed size you need depends on the weight of yarn you want to weave. TabbyandTweed supplies three reed sizes for its rigid heddle looms. The 8 epi (8 ends per inch) reed - included as standard with all TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom kits - is suitable for DK (double knit) weight yarn and is the best starting point for beginners. The 10 epi reed is for 4-ply (fingering weight) yarn, producing finer, lighter woven fabric. The 6 epi reed is for Aran weight yarn, producing thicker, warmer pieces. A quick rule of thumb: if your yarn label says DK, use the 8 epi reed; if it says 4-ply, use 10 epi; if it says Aran, use 6 epi.

Are the reeds / heddle compatible with other loom brands?

No - TabbyandTweed reeds are designed specifically for the TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom and are not compatible with other brands' looms. This is because different loom manufacturers produce reeds to their own internal dimensions. If you are looking for a replacement reed for a different brand of rigid heddle loom (Ashford, Kromski, Schacht etc.), you will need to source that directly from the relevant manufacturer.

What does a pick up stick do?

A pick-up stick is a flat wooden tool used to select individual warp threads on a rigid heddle loom, creating patterns and textures beyond the basic plain (tabby) weave. With a pick-up stick you can weave houndstooth, lace, warp float patterns, and other decorative designs directly into your fabric. The TabbyandTweed pick-up stick is used in the intermediate scarf kits and pick-up stick sampler kits - if you want to try pick-up stick weaving for the first time, those kits include the stick along with yarn, a pattern, and instructions.

What does the 4 shaft extension kit do?

The 4-shaft extension kit converts your TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom into a 4-shaft configuration, enabling a wider range of multi-shaft weave structures - including twill variations, overshot patterns, and other structures that require independent control of more than two warp layers. This is an advanced accessory for weavers who have already mastered basic rigid heddle weaving and want to explore more complex patterns without purchasing a separate floor loom. It is not a beginner accessory - it is designed for weavers who are already familiar with pick-up stick techniques and want to go further.

What is the TabbyandTweed carry bag used for?

The TabbyandTweed carry bag is designed specifically for the TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom and its standard accessories. It fits the 30cm (approximately 12-inch) width loom that is supplied in all TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom kits.
