What Is a Weaving Shuttle?
A shuttle is the tool that carries the weft yarn back and forth across the warp threads during weaving. As each shed is opened, the shuttle passes through - laying the weft yarn in place — then returns on the next row in the opposite direction. The shuttle is loaded with yarn wound around its body, which unspools smoothly as it passes through the warp.
Having three shuttles allows you to manage three separate yarn colours simultaneously - essential for tartan, houndstooth, and other multi-colour weave patterns. Each colour stays on its own shuttle and is rotated through the weft sequence in order.
When Do You Need More Shuttles?
Every TabbyandTweed complete loom kit and most intermediate scarf kits already include three shuttles. You might need additional shuttles if:
- You have progressed to a pattern that uses more shuttles than your current kit includes
- You want to keep multiple shuttles loaded and ready for quick pattern changes
- You have lost or damaged a shuttle and need a replacement
- You are weaving with a second person and want a shuttle each

FAQ's
What does a weaving shuttle do?
A shuttle carries the weft yarn across the warp threads during weaving. It passes through the shed (the gap between warp threads) on each row, laying the yarn in place as it goes.
Are these shuttles compatible with the TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom?
Yes. These are the same shuttles included in all TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom kits. At 28cm, they are designed to work with the TabbyandTweed loom's 26cm weaving width.
Why do I need three shuttles?
Three shuttles allow you to weave with three separate yarn colours simultaneously - one shuttle per colour. This is needed for tartan, houndstooth, log cabin and other multi-colour patterns.
Do these work with 4ply, Aran and DK yarn?
A: Yes. These shuttles are compatible with Aran, DK weight and 4ply yarn, covering the full range of TabbyandTweed scarf kits.
Are these FSC certified?
Yes, the birch plywood is FSC certified - consistent with all TabbyandTweed wooden products.
