The Joy of Weaving

Weaving is not just a craft; it is a way to connect with yourself and the materials you choose. When you handle fibres, you engage your senses. As we are weaving, we are twisting, threading and knotting the fibres which we find enables us to become immersed in the creativity of the activity which is both calming and mindful.

We particularly enjoy weaving with a frame loom as it allows us to experiment with different yarns and fibres transforming the raw materials into unique fabrics and works of art.

The Mindfulness of Weaving

Weaving promotes mindfulness through its repetitive actions and focus. Concentrating on the feel of the fibres and the vibrancy of the colours can lead to a sense of peace. We find that weaving offers us a therapeutic break from the busy world around us.

Choosing Your Materials

The magic of your weaving project begins with selecting the right materials. By using British wool, merino fibres, and recycled fabrics, you will be able to add character and texture to your creation. Each type of material offers unique benefits:

  • British Wool: Known for its warmth and durability, British wool forms a strong foundation for any wall hanging.

  • Merino Fibres: These fibres are soft and smooth, allowing you to introduce detailed designs and texture into your work.

  • Recycled Fabrics: Upcycling textiles keeps your project environmentally friendly while adding various colours, patterns, and texture. A visit to a local market, craft shop, or even a search through your own wardrobe can be a great source for the perfect materials!

Weaving Techniques for Texture and Colour

The true beauty of weaving lies in the diversity of textures and colours. Here are some techniques to consider as you embark on your crafting adventure. You may also be interested in a previous blog which discusses different methods of introducing texture on a frame loom - read blog here.

1. Tabby Weave

This foundation technique, which involves an over-and-under pattern, is great for beginners. It introduces a simple yet effective texture that can enhance your piece. In the image below you can see hat there are 4 weft rows using a single yellow thread followed by three further weft rows using a double thread. Just playing with the number of threads used can have an impact on the overall look of the weave.

2. Soumak Weave

By wrapping the fibers around the warp threads, the soumak weave creates depth and dimension. This technique is perfect for adding interesting elements to your wall hanging. This technique can be used with wool or as shown below with merino top fibres.

3. Combining Textures

Being adventurous with your materials can pay off. Layer British wool with the softness of merino fibres or colourful recycled fabrics to create a vibrant dynamic that showcases your creativity!

Next Steps: Completing Your Artwork

As you finalize your wall hanging, take a moment to evaluate your work. Does your piece have a balanced colour scheme? Are the textures complementing each other? Finding harmony is an essential part of the creative process.

Finishing Touches

Once you are satisfied with your masterpiece, it's time to remove it from the loom. Trim any extra yarn and secure loose ends to ensure a clean finish. Think about how you want to display your art—whether it’s in a frame, hanging on a branch, or draped like a tapestry. Trust your instincts. There is no wrong way to showcase your creativity

Colour is very important in any weaving project. However the image below also shows how effective texture is. The black and white image is just as stunning.
