A Beginner Weaving Kit That Teaches the Tartan Pattern on a 20cm FSC-Certified Frame Loom

Weave a navy, pale blue and orange tartan square in 100% British wool using this self-contained 20cm square frame loom kit. Full instructions included - no prior weaving experience needed.

What Tartan Weaving Looks Like on a Frame Loom

Tartan is produced by weaving sequences of coloured threads in both directions - vertically (the warp) and horizontally (the weft). When the same colour appears in both the warp and weft at the same position, it creates a solid block. When two different colours cross, they blend visually to create the characteristic interlocking grid of a tartan check.

On a square frame loom, this means warping the loom in the tartan colour sequence (navy, pale blue, navy, orange) and then weaving the weft rows in the same sequence. The instruction booklet guides you through this step by step. The result is a 20cm × 20cm square of woven tartan fabric in navy blue, pale blue and orange British wool.

What You will Make

The finished square is a versatile piece of handwoven fabric. It can be used as:

  • A coaster - the most popular first use; firm, flat, and functional
  • A framed textile - mount and frame the woven square as a decorative piece
  • A mending patch - woven visible mending with a tartan patch is distinctive and intentional
  • A lavender bag - fold and stitch the square into a small sachet
  • A greetings card insert - a handwoven tartan panel makes a card genuinely special
  • A component for a larger project - join several squares to create a patchwork or appliqué piece

The woven square shown in the photos is an example only and is not included in the kit.

What is in the Kit

FAQ's for Tartan Square Loom Kit

How do you weave tartan on a frame loom?

Tartan is woven by warping the loom in a repeating colour sequence (e.g. navy, pale blue, navy, orange) and weaving the weft in the same sequence. Where the same colour meets itself, it forms a solid block; where different colours cross, they blend to create the tartan check. The instruction booklet guides you through this process step by step.

Is this kit suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. The instructions cover warping the loom in the tartan sequence and weaving the pattern from scratch. No prior weaving experience is needed.

What is included in the kit?

A 20cm square FSC-certified birch frame loom, three mini skeins of 100% British wool yarn in navy blue, pale blue and orange, a tapestry needle, and a step-by-step instruction booklet.

What can I make with the woven square?

A coaster, a framed textile, a mending patch, a lavender bag sachet, a greetings card insert, or a component for a patchwork or appliqué project.

How does this kit differ from the standard square frame loom kit?

The standard kit comes in three sizes (15cm, 18cm, 20cm) with a general yarn selection and plain weave instructions. This tartan kit is fixed at 20cm with three specific yarn colours and instructions focused on weaving the tartan pattern.
