A Yarn and Pattern Kit for Rigid Heddle Loom Owners- Weave a Traditional Heritage Colourway in British Wool

Weave a green and mustard yellow tartan scarf in 100% British wool. This is a yarn and pattern kit for weavers who already own a rigid heddle loom and are comfortable with warping - the tartan colour sequence uses three shuttles and is more demanding than a plain weave or simple checked scarf, but the instruction booklet guides you through every step. The finished scarf is approximately 23cm wide and 150cm long, with a 13cm fringe at each end. The loom is not included.

What You Will Weave

A green and mustard yellow tartan scarf in 100% British wool - a colourway with deep roots in the British textile tradition. Green and mustard are among the most characteristic colours of British country tweeds, used across regional woollen fabrics for over a century. Woven in a tartan sett on a rigid heddle loom, the finished scarf has a heritage quality that comes from the combination of the colour palette and the natural character of British wool.

The tartan pattern is created by alternating the green and mustard colour sequence in both the warp and the weft, so that the two sequences cross and create the characteristic checked blocks. The instruction booklet sets out the exact warp colour order and weft repeat.

How Tartan Weaving Works on a Rigid Heddle Loom

Tartan weaving uses the same plain weave over-under motion as standard weaving, but with a specific colour sequence in both the warp and the weft. The warp threads are arranged in the tartan sett (the repeating colour blocks), and the weft is woven in the same sequence row by row. When the sett repeats cross in both directions, they produce the checked tartan pattern.

This kit uses three colours in the weft sequence. Three shuttles - one per colour - are recommended so that each colour is ready to use in rotation without rewinding between rows. If you only have one shuttle, the pattern can still be woven, but colour changes will take longer.

What's Included

  • Skeins of 100% British wool yarn in green and mustard yellow (DK weight)
  • Weaving instruction booklet with full threading sequence, warp colour order, and weft repeat chart for the tartan design

The loom, heddle, shuttles, and finished scarf shown in the images are not included. This is a yarn and pattern kit for weavers who already own a compatible loom.

Loom and Equipment Requirements

This kit requires a rigid heddle loom fitted with a 7.5 or 8 ends per inch (epi) heddle with a total of 82 holes and slots. The pattern works on any compatible rigid heddle loom, not only the TabbyandTweed loom. If you need an 8epi heddle, it is available separately in the TabbyandTweed accessories range.

Three shuttles are recommended - one for each colour in the weft rotation. See the explanation above for how the three-shuttle approach works in practice.

Buying with a Loom

This scarf kit is also available as a bundle with the TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom - see the rigid heddle loom kits section for the bundle option. If you are buying this kit as a gift for someone who does not yet own a loom, the bundle is the recommended option.

Who This Kit Is For

This kit is for weavers who own a rigid heddle loom and are comfortable with warping and basic colour weaving. The three-colour tartan sequence is more demanding than a plain weave or simple two-colour checked scarf, and is not recommended as a first project. Weavers who have completed one or two scarves and want to work with a more structured colour pattern will find this a rewarding next step.

Made in the UK

The pattern is designed by TabbyandTweed in their Salisbury, Wiltshire workshop. The yarn is 100% British wool sourced from British sheep.

FAQ's

What is the difference between tartan and tweed?

Tartan is a woven colour pattern defined by a sequence of colours repeated in both warp and weft to create a checked design. Tweed is a fabric type: a rough-textured, durable woollen cloth associated with British regional textile traditions. This kit uses a tartan colour sequence woven in British wool with the earthy character associated with tweed.

Does this kit include a loom?

No. This is a yarn and pattern kit for weavers who already own a rigid heddle loom. The kit contains skeins of British wool yarn and an instruction booklet. The loom and shuttles are not included. A bundle option with the TabbyandTweed loom is also available in the shop.

What loom do I need?

A rigid heddle loom fitted with a 7.5 or 8epi heddle with 82 holes and slots. The pattern works on any compatible rigid heddle loom. Three shuttles are also recommended for the weft colour rotation.

Why do I need three shuttles?

The tartan weft sequence uses three colours rotated across each row. A separate shuttle per colour makes it easier to maintain the correct colour sequence without cutting and rejoining the yarn at every colour change.

What is the finished size of the scarf?

Approximately 23cm wide and 150cm long, with a 13cm fringe at each end - approximately 176cm total including fringe.
