Your First Project - Weaving a Tartan Scarf
The included yarn and pattern guide you through weaving a black, blue and orange tartan scarf using the three-shuttle colour sequence. The instruction booklet covers warping the loom, setting up the tartan colour order, and weaving the pattern row by row. There is also a video tutorial on the TabbyandTweed YouTube channel that covers setting up the loom ready to weave. The finished scarf is approximately 23cm wide and 150cm long, with a fringe at each end.
Once the included yarn is used, the loom can be used with any DK weight yarn for further projects.
About the Loom
The TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom has a weaving width of 26cm and comes with an 8epi reed - the right sett for DK weight yarn, which produces a balanced, medium-weight woven fabric ideal for scarves and wraps. The loom includes a neutral heddle position that enables pick-up stick pattern weaving - a natural next step for weavers who want to move beyond plain weave and create textured or patterned structures on the same loom.
Dimensions: 34cm x 39cm footprint, 11cm height with the heddle raised, 9cm with the heddle lowered. Compact and lightweight - easy to store and travel with.
What Can I Weave Next?
The loom supports a wide range of projects beyond the first tartan scarf. TabbyandTweed sells yarn-and-pattern kits for additional scarf colourways and weave structures - including plain checked weave, log cabin, and further tartan colourways. Additional reeds in different epi ratings are available separately for working with finer or heavier yarns. The 4-shaft extension kit enables multi-shaft pattern weaving on the same loom for weavers ready to progress further.
The Project Bag Option
At checkout, you can add a TabbyandTweed project bag - a branded bag with inner pockets designed specifically for storing the loom and yarn accessories. The bag keeps everything together between projects and is shown in the product images. If you are buying this kit as a gift, the project bag makes an ideal addition.
Made in the UK
The TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom is designed and made entirely in our workshop in Salisbury, Wiltshire - not a generic off-the-shelf product. We also run weaving workshops on the same loom for buyers who want hands-on guidance alongside the kit.
FAQ's
Does this kit include a loom?
Yes. This is a complete kit - the fully assembled rigid heddle loom is included, along with all accessories and yarn for the first project. Nothing additional needs to be purchased to start weaving.
Is this kit suitable for a complete beginner?
Yes. The kit is designed for weavers with no prior experience. The instruction booklet starts from the beginning and guides you through every step. Chris, a verified buyer, called it "a fantastic kit - easy to follow instructions".
What is a rigid heddle loom?
A rigid heddle loom is a compact, hand-operated weaving loom. A slotted frame (the heddle) controls the warp threads - raising and lowering it creates the gap through which the weft yarn is passed. The TabbyandTweed loom has a 26cm weaving width and comes with an 8epi reed suited to DK yarn.
How long does it take to weave the first scarf?
Most beginners can warp the loom in around an hour and complete the scarf body in two to four hours of weaving time - typically spread across one or two sessions. The tartan project uses three shuttles, which adds a little management compared to a plain weave first project.
Can I weave other things after the first project?
Yes. The loom works with any DK weight yarn for further projects. TabbyandTweed sells yarn-and-pattern scarf kits in a range of weave structures and colourways. Additional reeds and the 4-shaft extension kit are available for weavers who want to develop further.
Is this a good gift for someone who wants to learn to weave?
Yes - everything needed to start is included, and the kit can be supplemented with the optional project bag for a complete ready-to-give gift. TabbyandTweed also runs weaving workshops that can be booked as a complementary experience gift.
