A Complete Beginner Kit with the TabbyandTweed Rigid Heddle Loom, 10epi Reed, and 4ply Wool/Nylon Yarn for a Red and Grey Checked Scarf

Start weaving with 4ply yarn from day one - this complete rigid heddle loom kit includes a fully assembled TabbyandTweed loom with a 10epi reed, all accessories, and 2 skeins of soft red and grey wool/nylon yarn for a checked scarf first project. No prior experience needed. Designed and made in our Salisbury workshop.

Why Start with 4ply?

Most rigid heddle weaving kits - including many of the other TabbyandTweed complete kits use DK yarn at 8epi. This kit uses 4ply yarn at 10epi, producing a finer, lighter, drapier fabric. The weave structure is denser more threads per inch resulting in a scarf that is lighter in hand, smoother in feel, and with sharper, more precise colour detail in the checked pattern. The 25% nylon content in the yarn adds durability and a subtle lustre that pure wool does not provide.

If you know you prefer finer fabrics, or if you have experience with finer yarns in other crafts, this is the complete kit to start with. If you want the most forgiving first weaving experience, the DK/8epi complete kits are the natural starting point.

What You'll Weave

A red and grey checked scarf in a soft 4ply wool/nylon blend - 22cm wide and 150cm long, with a 12cm fringe at each end. The checked pattern uses red and grey in alternating warp and weft sequences to produce a classic, even checked grid throughout the scarf. The 3-shuttle setup lets you maintain the colour sequence cleanly across the full length of the project.

What's Included

  • TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom - 26cm weaving width, 10epi reed included, fully assembled
  • Three shuttles
  • Warping peg
  • Two clamps
  • Plastic threading hook
  • Comprehensive instruction booklet - step-by-step setup and weaving guide with images

The 10epi reed is the right sett for 4ply yarn. If you want to weave DK projects on the same loom in future, the 8epi reed is available separately in the TabbyandTweed accessories range.

About the Loom

The TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom has a 26cm weaving width and comes with a 10epi reed suited to 4ply yarn. It includes a neutral heddle position for pick-up stick pattern weaving. Dimensions: 34cm x 39cm footprint; 11cm height with heddle raised, 9cm lowered. Compact, lightweight and easy to store.

What Can I Weave Next?

After the first checked scarf, the 10epi loom works with any 4ply or fingering weight yarn. The TabbyandTweed yarn-only 4ply red and grey kit is the most direct next project. A pink tartan and colour block 4ply kit is also available. To explore DK weaving on the same loom, the 8epi reed opens up the full TabbyandTweed DK scarf kit range.

The Carry Bag Option

At checkout, add a TabbyandTweed carry bag - ideal for storing the loom and accessories between sessions. The bag makes the kit a complete, ready-to-give gift.

Made in the UK

The TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom is designed and made entirely in our Salisbury, Wiltshire workshop. Weaving workshops on the same loom are also available if you would like hands-on guidance alongside the kit.

FAQ's

Is this different from the standard DK complete kits?

Yes. This kit includes a 10epi reed and 4ply yarn (75% wool/25% nylon) rather than the 8epi reed and DK wool used in the other TabbyandTweed complete kits. It produces a finer, lighter, drapier fabric with sharper pattern detail. Choose this kit if you want to start weaving with finer yarn.

Does this kit include a loom?

Yes. The fully assembled TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom with 10epi reed and all accessories is included.

Is this suitable for a complete beginner?

Yes, though 4ply yarn requires slightly more attention to tension than DK. The instruction booklet starts from scratch and guides you through every step.

What is a checked weave?

A checked pattern uses alternating colour sequences in the warp to create stripes, which cross with the weft colours to produce a classic checked grid. Red and grey are used in rotation to produce an even checked design throughout the scarf.

Can I use DK yarn on this loom?

Yes, with the 8epi reed sold separately. The 10epi reed included in this kit is for 4ply yarn.

What makes the wool/nylon blend different from pure wool?

The 25% nylon adds durability and a subtle lustre. The 75% wool retains warmth and natural character. The blend produces a more hardwearing and slightly smoother fabric than pure wool at 4ply weight.
