What is Houndstooth?
Houndstooth is a two-colour woven pattern with a distinctive broken or jagged check -each colour unit has notched corners that give it the characteristic ‘tooth’ shape. It has centuries of heritage in British and European textile traditions, from Scottish tweed to mid-century fashion design. In navy and grey, houndstooth has a crisp, high-contrast quality that reads as sophisticated and versatile.
How Houndstooth is Woven on This Loom
On a rigid heddle loom, houndstooth is produced using the colour-and-weave technique: two threads of navy and grey yarn are alternated in the warp in a regular sequence and the same sequence is used in the weft. Where like colours cross, the tooth pattern emerges automatically from the plain tabby weave. The instruction booklet guides you through the houndstooth warp setup step by step, with images throughout. No pick-up sticks or complex hand manipulation are required.
Navy and Grey: A Classic Pairing
Navy and grey is one of the most enduring houndstooth colourways - a combination rooted in British suiting and tweed traditions. The deep navy and cool grey produce a high-contrast pattern with a legible, sharp tooth that works equally well with casual and formal dress, across all seasons, for any wearer. It is a fundamentally different character from the brighter and bolder kits in the TabbyandTweed range: classic where they are contemporary, understated where they are vivid.

FAQ's
How do you weave a houndstooth pattern on a rigid heddle loom?
Houndstooth is produced by alternating two yarn colours in the warp in a regular sequence and repeating the same sequence in the weft. Where like colours cross in the weave, the characteristic V-shaped tooth pattern appears automatically. The instruction booklet in this kit guides you through the houndstooth warp setup step by step.
Is this kit suitable for complete beginners?
Yes. The loom arrives fully assembled. The instruction booklet guides you through warping and weaving step by step. The houndstooth pattern is produced automatically from the warp setup.
What is the difference between this kit and the TabbyandTweed navy and grey cotton kit?
This kit uses 100% British wool and produces a houndstooth pattern. The cotton kit uses 100% cotton yarn and produces a plain weave scarf. The wool houndstooth kit is warmer and patterned; the cotton kit is lighter and smoother, and is the choice for buyers who prefer to avoid wool.
What size scarf does this kit make?
A scarf which is 23cm wide, 150cm long with an additional 12cm fringe at each end.
