Tabby, Twill, Houndstooth, Tartan and Log Cabin - Five Techniques, One 15cm or 18cm Square Loom, Reusable and Made in the UK
This square frame loom kit teaches five weave structures in a single project - starting with the simplest tabby weave and building to the more complex log cabin design. Everything is included: the reusable FSC-certified loom, British wool yarn, and a step-by-step instruction booklet covering all five techniques. The finished squares can be used as coasters, patches, or combined into larger textile pieces. No experience needed.
The Four Weave Structures
The instruction booklet guides you through four distinct weave structures in order of complexity:
- Tabby (plain weave) - the most fundamental weaving structure. The weft yarn passes alternately over and under each warp thread. Simple, satisfying, and the foundation for everything else.
- Twill - creates a diagonal rib by offsetting the weft interlacement on each row. Adds texture and visual depth to the fabric surface.
- Houndstooth - a two-colour pattern in which the alternating colour sequences produce the classic broken check. Requires two yarn colours and produces immediate visual feedback on the consistency of your beat.
- Log cabin - the most complex structure in the kit. Light and dark threads are alternated in both the warp and the weft, so that the two sequences cross and produce bold, graphic colour blocks. Log cabin is a classic weave structure with a distinctive visual character very different from plain weave or twill.
- Tartan - a classic symmetrical heritage design.
What You Will Make
Each woven square is large enough to make a single square makes a coaster, a framed textile, or a visible mending patch. Multiple squares can be sewn together to make larger pieces: a small scarf or wrap, a tote bag panel, a cushion cover, or a patchwork wall hanging. The reusable loom means you can produce as many squares as you need - in any colourway - once the included yarn is used up.

About the Yarn
The kit uses 100% British wool from British sheep - a DK weight yarn suited to the 9epi sett of the frame loom. British wool is a natural, traceable fibre with warmth and a slight texture well suited to the structured weave patterns in this kit. Once the included yarn is used, the loom can be used with any DK weight yarn.
Made in the UK
The square frame loom is designed and made by TabbyandTweed in their Salisbury, Wiltshire workshop.
FAQ's
What is log cabin weaving?
Log cabin is a plain weave structure in which light and dark threads alternate in both the warp and the weft. When the two alternating sequences cross, they create characteristic colour blocks - bold and graphic, very different from plain weave or twill. It is the most complex technique in this kit.
What can I make with the woven squares?
A single square makes a coaster, textile artwork, or mending patch. Multiple squares can be sewn together to make a scarf, bag panel, cushion cover, or wall hanging. The loom is reusable, so you can make as many squares as you need.
Is this kit suitable for beginners?
Yes. The kit progresses from the simplest technique (tabby) to the most complex (log cabin), so no prior experience is needed. The instruction booklet covers each structure step by step.
What yarn can I use after the included yarn runs out?
Any DK weight yarn works with the 9epi frame loom. The loom is fully reusable - you can continue making squares in any colour or fibre.
Is the kit gift-ready?
Yes. Choose between a coloured gift bag or a gift box at checkout. Both options are ready to give with no additional wrapping needed.
