An Intermediate Yarn and Pattern Kit for Confident Rigid Heddle Weavers

Weave a striking three-colour log cabin scarf in pink, blue and white 100% British wool. This is a yarn and pattern kit for weavers who already own a rigid heddle loom and are confident with warping - the log cabin technique is more complex than plain weave, but produces a dramatically different result. The finished scarf is approximately 23cm wide and 150cm long, with a 12cm fringe at each end. The loom is not included.

What Is Log Cabin Weaving?

Log cabin is a plain weave structure in which light and dark threads alternate in a specific sequence in both the warp and the weft. When these alternating sequences cross, they create the characteristic block colour pattern that makes log cabin immediately recognisable - bold, graphic, and very different from the even surface of plain weave or the diagonal rib of twill.

This kit is a three-colour variation of the traditional two-colour log cabin structure. Pink, blue and white are sequenced across both the warp and the weft to create a colour play that shifts across the length of the scarf. The instruction booklet sets out the exact threading sequence, warp colour order, and weft repeat.

What You'll Weave

A three-colour log cabin scarf in pink, blue and white British wool - approximately 23cm wide and 150cm long, with a 12cm fringe at each end. The log cabin structure produces a fabric with a distinctive texture and visual depth: the alternating colour blocks create a surface that catches the light differently from plain weave, and the three-colour variation produces a richer, more complex pattern than the standard two-colour version.

What's Included

  • 7 skeins of 100% British wool yarn in pink, blue and white (DK weight) - enough for the full scarf
  • Weaving instruction booklet with full threading sequence, warp colour order, and weft repeat chart for the three-colour log cabin design

The loom, heddle, shuttles, and finished scarf shown in the images are not included. This is a yarn and pattern kit for weavers who already own a compatible loom.

Loom and Equipment Requirements

This kit requires a rigid heddle loom fitted with a 7.5 or 8 ends per inch (epi) heddle with a total of 82 holes and slots. The pattern will work on any compatible rigid heddle loom — not only the TabbyandTweed loom. If you need an 8epi heddle, it is available separately in the TabbyandTweed accessories range.

Four shuttles are recommended, one for each colour used in the weft sequence. Each shuttle is wound with a specific colour and used in rotation across each row of weaving. Weaving with fewer shuttles is possible but significantly more time-consuming, as the yarn must be rewound between rows to maintain the colour sequence.

Managing the Selvedge - A Note for First-Time Log Cabin Weavers

The selvedge edges (the sides of the woven fabric) require particular care in log cabin weaving because the alternating colour sequence at the edge of the warp affects how cleanly the selvedge behaves. If you have not woven log cabin before, the TabbyandTweed blog post on managing selvedge edges in log cabin weaving covers the specific techniques needed to keep clean, even edges throughout the project. It is worth reading before you begin warping.

About the Yarn

The kit contains seven skeins of 100% British wool in DK weight - three colours (pink, blue and white) in the proportions needed for the log cabin colour sequence. British wool is a natural, traceable UK fibre: warm, slightly textured, and with the character and durability that makes it suited to a scarf that will be worn. At DK weight with a 7.5 or 8epi sett, it produces a medium-weight woven fabric with good drape.

Who This Kit Is For

This kit is for weavers who are comfortable warping a rigid heddle loom and have woven at least one plain weave scarf. The log cabin technique introduces multiple shuttles, a specific warp colour sequence, and selvedge management - it is not a first-project kit, but it is a rewarding step up for a weaver ready for more.

If you have completed this kit and want to continue developing, the TabbyandTweed 4-shaft extension kit opens up multi-shaft pattern weaving on the same loom.

Made in the UK

The pattern is designed by TabbyandTweed in their Salisbury, Wiltshire workshop. The yarn is 100% British wool sourced from British sheep.

FAQ's

What is log cabin weaving?

Log cabin is a plain weave structure where light and dark threads alternate in a specific sequence in both the warp and the weft. The crossing sequences create a distinctive block colour pattern. This kit is a three-colour variation that uses pink, blue and white.

Does this kit include a loom?

No. This is a yarn and pattern kit for weavers who already own a rigid heddle loom. The kit contains 7 skeins of British wool yarn and a weaving instruction booklet. The loom, heddle, and shuttles are not included.

What loom do I need?

A rigid heddle loom fitted with a 7.5 or 8epi heddle with 82 holes and slots. The pattern works on any compatible rigid heddle loom. Four shuttles are also recommended for managing the weft colour rotation.

Is this suitable for beginners?

No. This is an intermediate kit for weavers who are confident with warping and have completed at least one plain weave scarf. Log cabin requires managing multiple shuttles and a specific colour sequence. If you are new to weaving, start with the TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom kits.

Why does log cabin need special selvedge management?

The alternating colour sequence in log cabin weaving affects how the weft behaves at the selvedge edges. Without attention to the colour at the edge of each row, the selvedge can become uneven or show colour irregularities. The TabbyandTweed blog post on log cabin selvedge management explains the specific techniques needed.

What is the finished size of the scarf?

Approximately 23cm wide and 150cm long, with a 12cm fringe at each end - 174cm total including fringe.
