A Yarn and Pattern Kit for Rigid Heddle Loom Owners - Soft 100% Cotton, Ideal for Weavers Who Prefer Cotton over Wool

Weave a houndstooth scarf in 100% soft cotton. This is a yarn and pattern kit for weavers who already own a rigid heddle loom. Available in two colourways: navy and grey, or pink and grey. The loom is not included.

Why Cotton?

The TabbyandTweed scarf kits are primarily designed around British wool, but this kit is for weavers who prefer a non-wool yarn - whether for reasons of skin sensitivity, allergies, or simply a preference for the lighter, cooler hand of cotton. Cotton produces a crisper, smoother scarf than wool: it drapes differently, feels cooler against the skin, and is naturally hypoallergenic. It is the same rigid heddle loom technique, but a distinctly different wearing experience.

What You'll Weave

A houndstooth scarf in your choice of navy and grey, or pink and grey cotton - approximately 20cm wide and 150cm long, with a 12cm fringe at each end. Houndstooth is a classic two-colour woven pattern: the alternating colour sequences in warp and weft cross to produce the characteristic broken check, with its distinctive four-pointed shapes. The two-colour weft in this pattern uses two shuttles, one per colour - slightly simpler to manage than the three-shuttle tartan kits.

Why Houndstooth Is a Good First Pattern

The houndstooth sequence is particularly useful for weavers learning to achieve a balanced weave - a structure in which warp and weft threads are equally dense. The two-colour weft rotation creates a natural visual check on weaving consistency: if the colour blocks appear square and even, the beat is right; if they appear elongated or compressed, the beat needs adjusting. The pattern gives immediate visual feedback that a single-colour plain weave does not, making it easier for a new weaver to self-correct and develop a consistent beat.

What's Included

  • 100% cotton yarn in your chosen colourway (navy and grey, or pink and grey)
  • Weaving instruction booklet with threading sequence, warp colour order, and weft repeat chart for the houndstooth design

The loom, heddle, shuttles, and finished scarf shown in the images are not included. This is a yarn and pattern kit for weavers who already own a compatible loom.

Loom Compatibility

This kit requires a rigid heddle loom fitted with a 7.5 or 8 ends per inch (epi) heddle with 82 holes and slots total. Two shuttles are needed - one for each colour in the houndstooth weft sequence. The pattern works on any compatible rigid heddle loom. If you need an 8epi heddle, it is available separately in the TabbyandTweed accessories range.

If you do not yet own a loom, this kit is also available as a bundle with the TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom — see the rigid heddle loom kits section for the bundle option.

Choosing a Colourway

Navy and grey produces a classic, understated houndstooth - versatile and suitable for most wardrobes. Pink and grey produces a softer, more contemporary palette - a lighter take on the traditional pattern. Both are available at checkout via the colour selector above.

Who This Kit Is For

This kit is for weavers who own a rigid heddle loom and are comfortable with warping. It is a good project for a weaver who has completed one or two plain weave projects and wants to develop their colour work and beat consistency. It is also the right choice for any weaver who prefers not to work with wool.

Made in the UK

The pattern is designed by TabbyandTweed in their Salisbury, Wiltshire workshop.

FAQ's

Can I weave a scarf without wool with this kit?

Yes. This kit uses 100% cotton yarn. It is designed for weavers who prefer cotton over wool for reasons of sensitivity, allergy, or personal preference.

What is houndstooth weaving?

Houndstooth is a two-colour woven pattern created by alternating colour sequences in both the warp and the weft. The crossing sequences produce the characteristic broken check with four-pointed shapes. It uses two shuttles, one per colour in rotation across each weft row.

Why does houndstooth help you learn a balanced weave?

The two-colour weft gives visual feedback on beat consistency: if the colour blocks appear square, the weave is balanced; if they appear elongated or compressed, the beat needs adjusting. A single-colour plain weave does not provide this feedback as clearly.

Does this kit include a loom?

No. This is a yarn and pattern kit for weavers who already own a rigid heddle loom. A loom bundle option is also available in the shop.

What loom do I need?

A rigid heddle loom with a 7.5 or 8epi heddle, 82 holes and slots total. Two shuttles are also needed. The pattern works on any compatible loom.

What is the difference between this and the wool scarf kits?

This kit uses cotton instead of British wool, producing a lighter, cooler, hypoallergenic scarf with a smoother hand. The finished scarf is 20cm wide (vs 23cm for the wool kits), and the houndstooth pattern uses 2 shuttles rather than the 3 required for the tartan kits.
