What's Included

  • TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom - 26cm weaving width, 8epi reed included, fully assembled
  • 7 skeins of 100% British wool yarn in blue, navy, black, grey and white - sufficient to weave the checked scarf
  • Three shuttles
  • Warping peg
  • Two clamps
  • Plastic threading hook
  • Comprehensive instruction booklet - step-by-step setup and weaving guide with images

The Checked Scarf

The first-project scarf uses blue, navy, black, grey and white British wool in a classic checked weave - alternating colour groups in the warp and weft to produce a balanced, graphic checked pattern across the full scarf.  The checked weave is more visually complex than a single or two-colour project: the seven skeins included are sized to support the full palette across the scarf's 23cm width and 150cm length, with a 12cm fringe at each end.

The YouTube Tutorial

Alongside the printed instruction booklet, TabbyandTweed have a free step-by-step video tutorial on their YouTube channel. The tutorial guides a new weaver through every stage of setting up the rigid heddle loom - a complement to the written instructions for weavers who find video guidance easier to follow. The YouTube channel also has further tutorials for weavers ready to develop their skills.

About the Loom

The TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom has a 26cm weaving width and comes with an 8epi reed suited to DK weight yarn. It includes a neutral heddle position for pick-up stick pattern weaving. Dimensions: 34cm x 39cm footprint; 11cm height with heddle raised, 9cm lowered. Compact and lightweight. Made with FSC certified Birch plywood in our UK workshop.

What Can I Weave Next?

After the five-colour checked scarf, the loom works with any DK weight yarn for further projects. TabbyandTweed sells yarn-and-pattern kits across a wide range of patterns and colourways. Two additional reeds are also available:

  • 10epi reed — for weaving with 4ply yarn; produces a finer, lighter fabric
  • 6epi reed — for weaving with Aran weight yarn; produces a chunkier, warmer fabric

Both reeds work with the same loom, expanding its range significantly beyond the starter DK/8epi setup.

The Project Bag

Add the TabbyandTweed project bag at checkout - a practical bag for storing the loom and accessories between sessions. Particularly useful if you plan to weave away from home.

Made in the UK

The TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom is designed and made in our Salisbury, Wiltshire workshop from FSC certified Birch plywood. Weaving workshops on the same loom are also available for buyers who would like hands-on guidance alongside the kit.

FAQ's

Does this kit include a loom?

Yes. The fully assembled TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom with 8epi reed, all accessories, and 7 skeins of British wool yarn are all included.

Why does the kit include seven skeins?

The checked first project (blue, navy, black, grey and white) requires more individual yarn skeins than a single or two-colour kit. Seven skeins provides enough of each colour to warp and weave the full checked scarf.

Is there a video tutorial?

Yes - TabbyandTweed have a free step-by-step tutorial on their YouTube channel covering the full setup and weaving process for this loom.

Can I use this loom for other projects after the first scarf?

Yes. The loom works with any DK weight yarn. TabbyandTweed sells yarn-and-pattern kits for further projects. A 10epi reed (4ply) and 6epi reed (Aran) are also available separately to extend the loom's range.

Is this suitable for a complete beginner?

Yes. The kit is specifically designed as a beginner's entry point to rigid heddle weaving. The printed instruction booklet and the YouTube tutorial together cover every step from unpacking to completing the first scarf.

How does this differ from the other TabbyandTweed complete kits?

This kit includes seven skeins of yarn (the most in the range) for a checked first project, plus a companion YouTube tutorial.
