"The colour combinations are very attractive... I like their aesthetic sense very much." - Isabel Draper, verified buyer, 5 stars
What Is Hand-Dyed Yarn?
Hand-dyed yarn is dyed by hand rather than in a commercial batch. The process creates natural tonal variations - pools of deeper and lighter colour, subtle shifts across the skein - that are impossible to replicate exactly. No two skeins are identical. In a woven piece, these variations create a depth and liveliness that uniformly-dyed yarn cannot produce. The plum and teal combination in this kit has been chosen for its colour harmony: deep, saturated plum alongside blue-green teal produces a rich, naturally balanced palette.
What You Can Make
The finished woven square has three natural uses:
- Coaster - a handwoven coaster in distinctive hand-dyed yarn is both functional and decorative. The closely woven 9epi structure produces a stable, firm fabric that works well for this use.
- Framing square - a woven square in plum and teal can be mounted or framed as a small textile artwork. The hand-dyed yarn produces a surface with enough tonal variation to make a visually interesting piece even in a simple plain weave.
- Mending patch - a woven square in a complementary colourway can be used as a visible mending patch, sewn onto clothing or textiles as an intentional decorative repair.
Choosing Your Loom Size
The kit comes in three sizes
- 15.5cm - a mid-size option. Versatile for both coasters and small framing squares.
- 18cm - a larger weaving area. Better for framing squares and display pieces.
- 20cm - the largest size. Ideal for a full-size coaster, a prominent framing square, or a larger decorative piece.
Each size uses the same 9epi sett, the same instruction booklet, and the same hand-dyed yarn. The yarn included is sufficient for 2 weaves on any size.

9epi - What This Means
9epi (9 ends per inch) is the warp spacing of the loom notches. A 9epi sett produces a closely woven fabric - tighter than many entry-level frame looms. Buyer Isabel Draper specifically chose this kit for its "indentations spaced to allow warp threads that are close together", noting that this closely spaced warp produces a more refined finished textile. The higher thread density also gives the hand-dyed colour variations more surface area to show through.
Made in the UK
The square frame weaving loom is designed and made by TabbyandTweed in their Salisbury, Wiltshire workshop from FSC and PEFC certified birch plywood.
FAQ's
What is hand-dyed yarn and how does it differ from regular yarn?
Hand-dyed yarn is dyed by hand in small batches, creating natural tonal variations across each skein. In a woven piece, these variations produce depth and liveliness that uniformly commercial-dyed yarn cannot. No two skeins are identical.
What size loom should I choose?
15.5cm for a versatile mid-size piece; 18–20cm for a framing square or display piece. All sizes use the same 9epi sett and instructions.
Can I use the finished square as a mending patch?
Yes - a handwoven square sewn onto a garment or textile is a visible mending technique that treats the repair as a decorative feature. The 9epi closely woven structure is stable and sews well as a patch.
Is this kit suitable for a complete beginner?
Yes. Frame loom weaving requires no complex setup - warp the frame, then weave. The instruction booklet guides you from the beginning. The hand-dyed yarn produces a beautiful result even with a simple plain weave.
How much yarn is included?
Enough for 2 weaves. The kit includes a mix of hand-dyed plum and teal yarn and standard British wool yarn.
Are the finished woven squares included?
No. The woven squares in the product images are examples of what you can make. The kit provides the loom, yarn and instructions; you weave your own squares.

Reviews
I bought this kit as I wanted a basic loom that was ‘not too big and not too small’, with indentations spaced to allow warp threads that are close together. What I’ve received seems to meet the bill although I haven’t tried using it yet.
I don’t need the yarns but they were included. As the colour combinations are very attractive, I shall be tempted to use them anyway, and will consider ordering from this business again as I like their aesthetic sense very much.
