A Yarn and Pattern Kit for Rigid Heddle Loom Owners with a 10epi Heddle - Weave a Checked Scarf
Weave a finer, lighter scarf in 4ply yarn - a 75% wool and 25% nylon blend in soft red and pale grey. This is a yarn and pattern kit for weavers who own a rigid heddle loom with a 10epi heddle. The 4ply sett produces a drapier, more refined fabric than the standard DK kits: lighter in hand, softer against the skin, and with finer detail in the weave structure. The loom is not included.
Why 4ply?
Most rigid heddle scarf kits - including the rest of the TabbyandTweed range - use DK weight yarn at 8epi. This kit uses 4ply yarn (also called fingering weight) at 10epi, which produces a different kind of fabric: lighter, drapier, and with a finer weave surface. If you want to explore what your rigid heddle loom can do with finer yarn, this is the kit for it.
About the Yarn
The kit uses a 75% wool and 25% nylon blend in soft red and pale grey. The nylon content adds durability and a subtle lustre to the fine yarn - at 4ply weight, pure wool can be fragile; nylon reinforces the fibre and gives the finished scarf a slightly smoother, more refined surface. The wool content provides warmth and natural character. Two skeins are included - sufficient to weave the full scarf.
What You'll Weave
A checked pattern scarf in soft red and pale grey 4ply yarn - approximately 23cm wide and 150cm long, with a 12cm fringe at each end.
Loom Compatibility — Important Note
This kit requires a rigid heddle loom fitted with a 10 ends per inch (epi) heddle with 100 holes and slots. This is different from the standard 8epi/82-slot heddle used in most TabbyandTweed kits. If you own the TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom, you will need to add the 10epi heddle separately from the accessories range before you can use this kit. Two shuttles are also needed.
The pattern works on any rigid heddle loom that meets this specification. A bundle option with the TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom is also available - see the rigid heddle loom kits section.
What's Included
- 2 skeins of 75% wool and 25% nylon yarn in soft red and pale grey (4ply / fingering weight)
- Weaving instruction booklet with threading sequence, warp colour order, and weft pattern for the checked design
The loom, heddle, shuttles, and finished scarf shown in the images are not included.
Who This Kit Is For
This kit is for weavers who own a rigid heddle loom with a 10epi heddle and want to explore weaving with finer yarn. It is not a beginner kit - weaving with 4ply requires more careful attention to tension and beat consistency than DK. Weavers who have completed one or two plain weave or checked scarves in DK and want to progress to finer yarn will find this kit a natural and rewarding next step.
Made in the UK
The pattern is designed by TabbyandTweed in their Salisbury, Wiltshire workshop.
FAQ's
Do I need a special heddle for this kit?
Yes. This kit requires a 10epi heddle with 100 slots — not the standard 8epi heddle. If you own the TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom, you will need to purchase the 10epi heddle separately from the accessories range.
What is the difference between 4ply and DK weaving?
4ply yarn is finer than DK and produces a lighter, drapier, more refined fabric. DK at 8epi gives a medium-weight weave; 4ply at 10epi gives a finer, closer weave. Both use the same basic rigid heddle technique - 4ply just requires more attention to consistent beat.
Why does this kit use a wool/nylon blend?
Nylon adds durability and lustre to fine 4ply yarn. At fingering weight, pure wool can be fragile; the 25% nylon content strengthens the fibre and gives the finished scarf a smoother, more refined surface while retaining wool's warmth.
Is this kit suitable for a beginner?
This kit is for weavers who already own a loom with a 10epi heddle.
What is the finished scarf size?
Approximately 23cm wide and 150cm long, with a 12cm fringe at each end - approximately 174cm total including fringe.
Can I buy this kit with a loom?
Yes - a bundle option with the TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom is available in the shop. Note that the bundle will require the 10epi heddle as well as the standard 8epi heddle for full compatibility with this kit.
