What Backstrap Belt Weaving Is
Backstrap belt weaving is one of the oldest and most portable weaving techniques in the world. One end of the warp (the vertical threads) attaches to a fixed point - a door handle, a table leg, a hook. The other end connects to a cord worn around your waist. By leaning back slightly, you control the tension of the warp with your own body, leaving both hands free to use the heddle and shuttle.
The technique produces narrow woven bands: belts, bag straps, guitar straps, camera straps, decorative ties, and braids. The TabbyandTweed kit uses an inkle-style pre-warped heddle that makes the process as accessible as possible - no prior weaving experience is needed.
 
What You will Make
The kit produces a woven belt approximately 2.5cm wide in blue and pale teal - the design shown in the product images. The finished belt can be worn as a traditional belt, used as a bag handle strap, or cut to length for a narrower strap or tie.
Once the kit yarn is used, the heddle can be re-warped with your own yarn - DK cotton for a standard-weight belt, or 4-ply cotton for a finer, lighter result. Different colours and patterns are possible with your own yarn choices.
