Weave a Distinctive Wearable Cowl That Hangs in a Triangle - Detailed Instructions, British Wool Yarn Included, Loom Not Required

An intermediate weaving kit for rigid heddle loom owners. Weave a rainbow and navy cowl that, when worn doubled around the neck, hangs in a distinctive triangle shape - a bold, wearable result that goes well beyond a standard flat scarf. 8 skeins of British wool, detailed instructions, and the loom is not included.

How the Triangle Cowl Works

The cowl is woven as a flat strip on your rigid heddle loom, using a navy warp as the base with rainbow colours woven in sequence through the weft. Once the strip is woven and finished, the two short ends are joined together at a specific angle to form a continuous loop. When you loop this joined cowl twice around your neck, the angled seam creates a pointed triangle that hangs naturally at the front or side.

The triangle is not an applied embellishment or a sewn-on shape - it is a geometric consequence of how the woven strip is joined. The instruction booklet guides you through the joining technique step by step, with images.

The Rainbow & Navy Colourway

Navy is the dominant colour in this cowl - it forms the main warp threads that run along the length of the piece. The seven rainbow colours are woven through as the weft, creating horizontal colour bands against the navy ground. When the cowl hangs as a triangle, the navy and rainbow colours work together to create a bold, structured visual effect - this is not an all-over rainbow; it has depth and contrast from the navy base.

The 4-Shuttle Setup

This kit works best with 4 shuttles. Each shuttle is wound with two different coloured yarns, allowing you to progress through the 7-colour rainbow sequence efficiently without stopping to re-wind after every colour change. The instruction booklet explains the shuttle sequence and colour order.

What You’ll Make

A rainbow and navy triangle cowl in British wool. When looped twice around the neck, the cowl sits comfortably with a triangular point that can be positioned at the front or to the side. The cowl is sized to be worn as a substantial accessory - not a lightweight scarf.

The cowl shown in the product images is not included - it is an example of what you will weave with this kit.

What’s in the Kit

  • 8 skeins of British wool yarn - navy (main warp colour) and 7 rainbow colours, sufficient to weave the complete cowl
  • Detailed instruction booklet for the rainbow and navy triangle cowl pattern

The loom and 4 shuttles are not included. This kit is designed for existing rigid heddle loom owners.

Loom Compatibility

  • Rigid heddle loom with a 7.5 or 8 ends per inch (epi) heddle
  • 78 holes and slots total (note: this is different from the 82 of the flat scarf kits)
  • 4 shuttles recommended

The TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom (8epi, 26cm weaving width) is fully compatible. If you don’t yet own a loom, see the TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom kits.

Who This Kit Is For

This is the most technically ambitious kit in the TabbyandTweed range. It is for weavers who are confident in warping their rigid heddle loom and have completed at least one previous project. The multi-colour warp setup, 4-shuttle management, and the joining technique to create the triangle all require an intermediate level of skill and patience.

It is not recommended as a first or second weaving project. If you are looking for a less demanding intermediate project, the colour-and-weave or log cabin intermediate scarf kits are good precursors.

What a Buyer Says

“Beautiful colours… looking forward to the challenge as I have not tried anything so ambitious — would recommend TabbyandTweed.”

FAQ's

How does the triangle shape form?

The woven strip is joined end-to-end at a specific angle rather than straight across. When looped twice around the neck, this angled seam creates a natural triangular drape that hangs at the front or side.

Is this kit suitable for beginners?

No. This is the most technically ambitious kit in the TabbyandTweed range. It requires confidence in warping, managing 4 shuttles, and a finishing/joining technique. At least one previous intermediate weaving project is recommended as preparation.

Why does this kit use 8 skeins?

Navy forms the main warp colour. The remaining 7 skeins provide the seven rainbow weft colours - one per colour of the spectrum.

Why are 4 shuttles needed?

Each shuttle holds two colours, allowing efficient progression through the 7-colour rainbow sequence without re-winding after each colour change.

What loom do I need?

A rigid heddle loom with 7.5 or 8epi heddle and 78 holes/slots (not 82 as for flat scarves). 4 shuttles are also recommended.
