A Yarn and Pattern Kit for Rigid Heddle Loom Owners Ready to Explore Colour & Weave Techniques

An intermediate yarn and pattern kit for weavers who already own a rigid heddle loom and are ready to move beyond plain weave. Using a two-colour warp arrangement in burgundy pink and white British wool, this kit guides you through weaving two classic colour and weave patterns: log cabin and houndstooth. The loom is not included.

What Colour and Weave Weaving Is

Colour and weave is a rigid heddle technique where two contrasting yarn colours are arranged in the warp in a specific repeating sequence. When woven in plain tabby, this arrangement produces geometric patterns automatically - the visual complexity comes from the warp setup, not from complex manipulation during weaving. The result looks far more intricate than the technique actually requires.

The instruction booklet walks you through the two-colour warping sequence step by step, with images throughout. Once warped correctly, the patterns emerge as you weave.

The Log Cabin and Houndstooth Patterns

This kit produces two distinct colour and weave structures in the same scarf:

  • Log cabin - a checkerboard-like texture created by alternating the two warp colours. Woven sections of log cabin have a woven-block appearance with strong colour contrast.
  • Houndstooth - the classic V-shaped cross-hatch pattern, produced by varying the weft colour sequence against the two-colour warp. In burgundy pink and white, houndstooth has a bold, graphic quality.
  •

Both patterns are woven on the same warp using the same two colours - the pattern changes come from how the weft is ordered during weaving.

What You will Make

A burgundy pink and white colour and weave scarf in British wool. Finished dimensions: approximately 22cm wide × 150cm long, with a 12cm fringe at each end.

The scarf shown in the product images is not included - it is an example of what you will weave with this kit.

What is in the Kit

  • British wool yarn in burgundy pink and white - sufficient to weave the complete scarf
  • Instruction booklet with step-by-step images for the two-colour warp setup and weaving the log cabin and houndstooth patterns

The loom is not included. The kit is designed for existing rigid heddle loom owners.

Loom Compatibility

  • Rigid heddle loom with a 7.5 or 8 ends per inch (epi) heddle
  • 82 holes and slots total
  • 2 shuttles (note: this kit requires 2 shuttles, not 3 as for some other kits)

The TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom (8epi, 26cm weaving width) is fully compatible with this kit. If you don’t yet own a loom, see the TabbyandTweed rigid heddle loom kits.

Who This Kit Is For

This kit is designed for weavers who have completed at least a few projects on a rigid heddle loom and are comfortable with warping and plain weave. The colour and weave warp setup is more involved than a single-colour warp - but it is entirely manageable with the step-by-step instructions provided. If you’ve woven a plain scarf and want to take the next step into pattern weaving, this is the right kit.

If you have a rigid heddle loom and want to try a different intermediate technique, the TabbyandTweed pick-up stick sampler kit teaches 11 pick-up stick patterns and is a natural companion to this kit.

FAQ's

What is colour and weave weaving?

Colour and weave is a rigid heddle technique where two contrasting colours are arranged in the warp in a repeating sequence. When woven in plain tabby, this produces geometric patterns - such as log cabin and houndstooth - automatically from the warp setup.

What is log cabin weaving?

Log cabin is a colour and weave pattern produced by alternating two contrasting warp colours. The crossing of the colours creates a checkerboard-like texture. It is one of the most popular patterns achievable on a rigid heddle loom using the colour and weave technique.

Is the loom included?

No. This is a yarn and pattern kit for weavers who already own a rigid heddle loom. You will need a loom with a 7.5 or 8epi heddle, 82 holes/slots, and 2 shuttles.

Is this kit suitable for beginners?

No. This is an intermediate kit for weavers who have completed at least a few projects on a rigid heddle loom and are comfortable with warping. The two-colour warp setup is more involved than a single-colour warp, though the instructions cover it step by step with images.

What size scarf does this kit make?

Approximately 22cm wide and 150cm long, with a 12cm fringe at each end.
